History Phi Mu

Founders

Phi Mu Fraternity was originally founded as the Philomathean Society at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia on January 4, 1852 by three young women. These women were Mary DuPont Lines, Mary Myrick Daniel, and Martha Hardaway Redding. It is considered to be a Fraternity because the word sorority did not yet exist when it was founded. The fourth of March is celebrated as Founders' Day in commemoration of March 4, 1852, the day the founding was publicly announced. In 1904, the organization was incorporated as Phi Mu Fraternity and additional chapters were immediately established.

The Kappa Xi chapter of Phi Mu was founded at Livingston University in 1969. We are the only organization for women that provides our members with an opportunity for housing. Phi Mu Hall is located on the fourth floor of Selden Hall and was established in 1993.
